Lost and Found Pets
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I
LOSE MY DOG OR CAT?
-
Start
looking immediately! In general, try to search an area of one square
mile around your home. Remember to be vigilant but calm in your search,
listening for cries, whimpers, barks, meows, the jingling of identification
tags or collar bells, etc., as your pet may be injured or trapped and unable
to come to the sound of your voice. Make sure to use your pet's name
clearly.
-
Contact local shelters (see list below),
police, and veterinarians to see if anyone has reported finding or seeing your
pet. Remember,
if your pet is taken to an animal shelter you may only have a short time
(normally 3 days if your pet is not wearing a license) to claim it before it is
destroyed. It is very important to act quickly, and to continue to check
back daily with area animal shelters until your pet is recovered.
-
If you are an Oxford resident with a lost
dog, you may call the Oxford Police Department to see if your pet has been
picked up or reported. Unfortunately there is no law in Oxford that
requires cats to be picked up, so the police do not keep track of them.
If you live outside the Oxford city limits, contact your closest police
department or animal control department (again, see list below).
-
Contact neighbors, friends, or anyone who
could have seen your dog or cat.
-
Make sure to have all tag numbers (rabies,
state license, microchip, etc.) together for reference in case one is needed.
You may call your veterinarian for the rabies tag number or, if you have lost
a dog, you can call the county auditor for your dog's license number.
If you have
thoroughly searched for your pet and contacted the appropriate authorities but
have had no success, the next thing to do is to make flyers or posters of your
pet, including the following information:
--a recent picture of your pet and/or description, including age, height,
weight, and distinguishing characteristics
NOTE: Pictures are the best way to insure
that your pet will be found
--the type of collar your pet is wearing (electric fence collar,
reflective collar, chain collar, leather collar, etc.)
--name of dog or cat, including any nicknames or "pet" names
--where you live or the place your pet was lost
--contact information for you or your family, including work phone, cell phone,
home phone, pager, etc.
--ALWAYS remember to date your posters/flyers!
WHEN YOUR PET IS FOUND:
- Take your pet to your veterinarian for a complete physical
exam. This will help ensure your pet is healthy and free from traumatic
injuries, infections, or internal or external parasites.
- Remember to thank all of the
people and/or facilities involved in the return of your pet.
- Don't forget to take down
ALL of the flyers you posted regarding your lost pet. Remember, if you
don't take them down, people will still think your pet is missing!
